You define a mask with the password attributes that you still remember, like the password length, the initial/last character of the password, etc. The program will just crack the password according to these important information, dramatically speeding up the processing. For example, you know your password is 8-character long with the initial character is A and the last is the digit 0, then your password is going to be "A******0". Then, it will just try to recover the six characters in the middle instead of trying random guesses, even not knowing how many characters in the password!
